Gateshead pub The Plough shut for deep clean after customer tests positive for coronavirus

A Gateshead pub is undergoing a deep clean as it shuts for a day after a customer tested positive for coronavirus.

The Plough, in Old Durham Road, Deckham, Gateshead, closed on Wednesday evening and is expected to remain shut until Friday morning.

The affected customer was in the pub between 3pm and 7pm on Sunday August 16, Allan Dinning, who runs The Plough with Steve Ross, told ChronicleLive.

Mr Dinning explained The Plough was told on Wednesday evening about the positive test, management immediately informed patrons and staff who could have come into contact with the affected customer and shut the pub for a deep clean.

He added: "All five staff have been for tests.

"We are waiting for the outcomes of that before we go back in."

If staff test negative, The Plough expects to reopen at 11am on Friday August 21.

In a Facebook post published on Wednesday evening, The Plough told its followers: "Due to a Covid threat The Plough will be closed for the next 24 hours for a deep clean.

"We will reopen on Friday at 11am. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause but we must follow government guides.

"Our main concern is the safety and well being of our customers.

"From all the management and staff please stay alert and stay safe."

The pub is the latest in a string of closures as venues have reported being visited by customers who later tested positive for the condition with venues in Newcastle, Seaham and Stanley all closing for a deep clean.
