Gateshead primary school to be presented with new defibrillator after theft

A Gateshead school which was the victim of a cruel theft now has some good news thanks to police and a charity.

Earlier this month staff at Bill Quay Primary School and pre-school noticed that the defibrillator which was kept outside their school gates was missing.

The Ambulance Service later said the defibrillator box had not been opened legitimately, confirming that the defibrillator had in fact been stolen.

The students had spent the previous year raising money for the defibrillator.

Children took part in a 'wear red day' and hand-delivered letters to local businesses asking for donations.

The school has now been presented with a new defibrillator by the Stephen Carey Fund.

Teaching assistant Joanne Robinson said: "The children are absolutely over the moon that somebody has presented them with this defibrillator because it recognises all the hard work that they have put in."

"One of the children said that it is good to know that there are some good people in the world."

She went on to say that the school was very grateful for the response that they've had.

The Stephen Carey Fund, which is a Northumberland charity which aims to combat cardiac arrest, was so moved by the theft, that they paid for the new defibrilator.

PC Emma Bowman from Gateshead West is fundraising to install CCTV cameras outside the school to avoid any future theft.

The defibrillator is believed to have been stolen between 12pm on Saturday, August 24, and 9am on Monday, September 2.

Anyone who can help police is asked to call 101 quoting log 665 02/09/19 or report it online at the Northumbria Police website .
