Gateshead postwoman dresses as the Grinch to deliver mail

Postwoman Carole Hynes, of Burnopfield, County Durham has been spreading the Christmas spirit and making residents smile by dressing up on her round.

Normally seen delivering post in the Blaydon and Winlaton areas, Carole, 40, first took to her round as an elf last year and has added to her costume collection - much to the delight of residents.

Carole, who has been working as a postwoman for 15 years, said: "It started with my love of bobble hats when it's cold.

"I have a few and then came across an elf one last year, then thought I'd add tights.

"It caused such a positive reaction I added to the collection this year and have five lots.

"Everyone's reaction on my round has been positive."

Since starting the round, Carole said residents have loved seeing what she will be wearing.

She said: "People stop me to say I have made their day and make them smile and tell me to keep doing what I'm doing, smiling and making people happy.

"I visit an old persons home and school on this duty and my outfits are loved by all.

"I just think if I can make people smile with such a simple gesture it can change their whole thinking that day and maybe make someone who's feeling down that little bit cheerier."

Carole loves Christmas but said it can be a stressful and busy time of year for Royal Mail staff.

She added: "Being festive helps keep some cheer going."
