Gateshead man given curfew after threatening to stab doctor and nurse

A man who had been hit over the head with a hammer told a doctor and nurse who would stab them as well as "people in the street".

Paul Hays, 57, had been taken to Gateshead’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital on May 2.

Hays had been drinking at home before being hit over the head with a hammer and stabbed.

When he was taken to hospital he became aggressive and threatened to stab a doctor and nurse and “people in the street”.

Hays, of Duddon Place, Beacon Lough, Gateshead, discharged himself but then refused to leave and demanded a sedative, a court heard.

When the team treating him refused at around 6am on Sunday, May 2, he threatened to “knock them down” and “raise hell”.

Prosecutor Glenda Beck said: “The doctor was working when police came on to report of a man with multiple stab wounds.

“It was around midnight, and the defendant was placed in the resuscitation room and there was a concern, but they were only superficial injuries.

“He was too intoxicated to be examined and too sleepy. At around 6am, he woke up and discharged himself.

“There was an issue with his clothing and of getting back into his house.

“He became more and more agitated and aggressive. He said staff should get it sorted. He refused to leave.”

Mrs Beck said staff threatened to call security, which riled Hays further, and he said, “If you don’t get me a sedative, I’ll knock you down”.

She added: “The doctor heard him say he would knife staff and he would go into the street and knife people, and that it would be their fault.”

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court was told staff were so alarmed by his words and behaviour they summoned police.

Charlie Weidner, defending, said: “Mr Hays doesn’t recall much of what went on in hospital. He was brought into hospital with a number of stab wounds.

“He says a friend had been out during the day, as had he. He says he hadn’t had much more than four cans of lager.

“The friend came back and turned the gas on, but Mr Hays knew that he couldn’t do that because the gas had been cut off.

“He remonstrated, and Mr Hays tells him to get out, but the man took hold of a hammer and hit him on the head and stabbed him several times.

“He stumbled to a neighbour’s house and the police were called.

“He knew that he was in the hospital, but the next thing he was waking up in a police cell. He arguably had concussion.”

Hays pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive or insulting words with intent to cause fear of unlawful violence.

District Judge Paul Currer sentenced him to a six-week community order with a linked 7pm to 7am curfew.

Hays must also pay a £95 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
