Gateshead hotel could be flattened to make way for extra care block

A hotel in a leafy area of Gateshead could be demolished to make way for a supported housing scheme.

Galliford Try NE is behind plans to pull down the Ravensdene Lodge Hotel and replace it with a three to four storey "extra care" housing development containing 85 one and two bedroom apartments.

The flats will also boast communal facilities such as a coffee bar, a hair salon and lounges.

'Significant threat' posed by Brexit could cause price of new Metro fleet to spiral

The developer claims that the building will help its elderly residents hold on to their independence for longer.

A statement submitted to the council said: "The design of the building aims to provide a barrier free environment, thus enabling the residents to maintain their independence much further into their life."

It also says the flats are designed with wheelchair users in mind, and have enough space within living rooms, main bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and hallways for the turning of a wheelchair.

All of the apartments will be affordable and available to rent, with rent levels set by Gateshead Council.

The council's planning committee will decide on the application by June 6.
