Gateshead hotel closed after guest captures video showing rat walking through venue

A Gateshead hotel has closed its doors after a guest captured footage of a rat running through the landing.

The footage was submitted by a disgusted guest at the Rowers Hotel, in Dunston,  who had booked a stay following a work Christmas party but got more than he bargained for.

He said: "There was a rat running across the landing, the tiles in the bathroom were stained.

"We were booked in for breakfast as well but we were gone before breakfast, you can catch Weil's disease from rats it can kill you."

Pictures posted online by owner OYO Hotels and Homes show cosy nautical themed rooms, but the guest warned that this doesn't tell the whole story.

The guest, who asked not to be named, added: "There was a skip full of rubbish out the back, it was very uncomfortable and unpleasant."

A spokesman for OYO Hotels & Homes admitted that "a single rodent" had got in as a result of improvement works being carried out at the St Omers Road property and said a full investigation is taking place

A statement said: ''At OYO Hotels & Homes, we take hygiene standards and the experience of our customers very seriously.

"Unfortunately, a recent incident at one of our hotels in Gateshead was brought to our attention, during which a single rodent was able to gain access while builders were at the property carrying out improvement works.

"We are investigating the case and working with both pest control and the relevant safety officers to reopen the hotel.

"We apologise for this isolated incident and will continue to conduct regular audits at all of our hotels to ensure the highest hygiene and safety standards for our partners and guests.''

ChronicleLive contacted Gateshead Council for a response.
