Gateshead homes left without water after pipe bursts and floods road

More than 120 homes were left without water after a water main burst and flooded a road in Gateshead.

Handy Drive, in Dunston, was engulfed in water after the main burst, with the road closed for a number of hours while repair works were carried out.

Two cars also became stranded in the flood water between Mandela Way and Cross Lane.

Emergency services were called at around 11am on Thursday and drivers were warned not to approach the area.

While the road was closed, a diversion route was in place along Mandela Way.

Around 126 properties were left without water due to the burst until around 5pm, while Northumbrian Water carried out repairs.

The water authority said the flooding had been caused by blocked drainage gullies.

A Northumbrian Water spokeswoman said: “We are working hard to get all of the surface water drained as quickly as possible and a road sweeper is attending to help reduce the flooding.

“We expect the road to be opened back up at 7pm tonight.

“Our teams are now finishing up the repairs, and water supplies should be restored to customers by 5pm.

“We apologise for any disruption this may have caused, and thank customers for their patience during this time.”
