Gateshead hit by new blow as directors walk out

Vanarama National League Club Gateshead's perilous situation has taken a turn for the worse.

The Heed's only two directors have left the troubled fifth-tier outfit.

Midlands-based Nigel Harrop and local businessman Trevor Clark only joined Gateshead on the eve of the final game of the season.

The pair met with concerned National League officials in London last Friday.

Owner Dr Ranjan Varghese and chief financial adviser Joseph Cala are believed to have separately met the Football Association.

Initially putting the club up for sale for just one pound the controversial businessman is now seeking a six-figure fee for the fifth-tier club.

This despite extensive outstanding debts that have yet to be settled.

Gateshead were hit with more penalties by the league this week due to rule breaches.

The situation at the beleaguered club, who are fighting for their lives, is now at crisis point, with Clark and former Ilkeston FC owner Harrop have resigned.

Varghese and Cala are now running the club themselves, Varghese based in Hong Kong.

The only employee is new manager Dave Dickson, who recently replaced the popular Ben Clark at the Heed helm.

Dickson said: "Clark and Harrop have had discussions with Cala that have subsequently seen them walk away.

"Obviously it's a difficult situation and one we are trying to resolve."

Dickson held trials with prospective new signings last weekend and had another trial session lined up for Saturday.

Cala and Varghese, particularly the former, hold Gateshead's future in their hands.

There is a real concern that they could cut their losses and liquidate the club if a sale doesn't go through.

At present Gateshead have no players, nowhere to play and a substantial list of creditors.

The future looks bleak unless a deal can be brokered to end Cala and Varghese's calamitous reign on Tynerside.
