Gateshead FC fans choose Happy Hardcore anthem as song the players will walk out to

The music a football club chooses to play as its stars to run out onto the pitch can turn unlikely songs into anthems.

Think 'Z Cars' for Everton, The Beautiful South's 'Rotterdam' at Luton Town, or Sunderland's former synonymy with Republica's 'Ready To Go' - which a popular club message board takes its name from.

Others are so over-used they have become a cliché.

Gateshead fans chose to snub the obvious and select something a little different when their club asked them what they'd like to hear as the Heed run out onto the International Stadium pitch this season.

Suggestions led to an eight-song short list, which became two after further rounds of voting on social media.

In the 'Final', supporters had two contrasting options.

The first was The White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army', a song widely used by football clubs and supporters across the world. However good the song is, you could be anywhere when you hear it.

Children of the Night at Silent Disco

The second option was Nakatomi's late 90s happy hardcore anthem, 'Children of the Night'. A tune blasted out of tinny Sony Ericsson mobile speakers throughout the Nexus transport network in the early 2000s.

If you're not familiar with Nakatomi's work, Children of the Night is a quick-tempo number, with high pitched vocals declaring: "We are the children of the night. We fight for the future of our nation. Let's come together and unite. Nothing's gonna stop us now."

Children of the Night won, clinching 58% of votes on Twitter and 56% on Facebook.

Gateshead have pledged to play Children of the Night when the team run out before games, starting with the Tynesiders' friendly match-up against Middlesbrough at the International Stadium on Wednesday, July 10.

Club general manager Alisha Henry told ChronicleLive: "Yes we will be sticking with the vote and this will be proudly played against Boro."

Fan reaction was mixed.

Some feared the song won't inspire players. Others think it's absolutely class.

One supporter pointed out that Dutch champions Ajax regularly play rave tunes at the Johan Cruyff Arena, which clearly hasn't harmed them.

Tickets for the Boro match are on sale now, priced at £8 for adults, £5 concessions, and £2 for under-16s. Under 12s go free with a paying adult.

Season tickets are on sale too, priced between £25 and £195. Gateshead FC will play in the National League North this season. The club finished 17th in the National League last season, despite a 9 point deduction.  The final position would have kept them in the league, but Gateshead were demoted due to breaching league rules. The club has since been taken over by new owners.
