Gateshead Council given almost £3m in winter battle against coronavirus

Gateshead Council is set to get almost £3m of additional funding in the fight against coronavirus.

A report heard by the authority's cabinet on Tuesday stated that initially the council budgeted to spend £220.761m this financial year.

However, in September the council's cabinet agreed to increase that to £238.071m as pandemic costs spiralled.

The increase was covered by additional Government coronavirus cash and ring-fenced funding from the Better Care Fund and Public Health grants.

Since then a fourth tranche of funding worth £2.89m has been announced by central Government.

A report said: "On 22 October Government announced Gateshead would receive a fourth tranche of Covid-19 grant of £2.890m."

The council's cabinet voted to increase the budget to reflect this.

This cash will be used to fund extra costs caused by a local lockdown as well as pandemic expenses.

However, this money won't be spent straight away, and will instead be held back until "more detailed analysis" can be carried out.

The report added: "The allocation will be utilised to fund winter pressures, additional cost associated with local lockdown and increased expenditure relating to the pandemic which is yet to be fully quantified.

"The amount will be held in contingency until more detailed analysis of costs can be carried out and will then be distributed accordingly."

Council leader Martin Gannon said it is not clear what the future holds.

He said: "It's a constantly moving picture, a snap shot, we don't know what's going to happen this winter, and there is no indication of further funding, we have no idea of what is going to happen going forward."

Coun Catherine Donovan added: "The need out there is getting greater, particularly unemployment in the North East, the needs of our people are going up all the time."
