Gatehouse Primary children launch crack down on lazy school-run drivers

Gatehouse Primary kids are cracking down on lazy school-run drivers parking dangerously at the gates.

And pupil junior road safety officers will collar offenders who ignore their safety plea.

The children handed out leaflets they designed to parents to hammer home the message.

A warning sign at the zig-zags on Dromore Road outside the school was also unveiled.

Head teacher John Riley said: “The pupils met with PC Brown our community policeman.

“We were having trouble with cars parking dangerously on the kerb and zig-zags.

“Pupils will be going out regularly in high-viz vests. They will take the registration number of cars parked where they shouldn’t be.

“They will then hand their reports to PC Brown.”

Mr Riley said the campaign aimed to encourage people to park away from the school at peak times.

But the safety drive also has a healthy living message.

He added: “A five minute walk to school is better than nothing.

“It does make a difference if you have had a bit of fresh air.”

Dee and Glenkens councillor Pauline Drysdale is backing the initiative. She said: “I think it is important to encourage children to walk to school.

“It’s vital to be physically active to promote health and well-being.

“The school is being really proactive. They do a half-mile walk at school every morning.”

The council is installing speed bumps along Dromore Road.
