Gatehouse pensioner raises hundreds of pounds for nursing home with whist srives

A Gatehouse pensioner has become a fundraising fanatic for a local nursing home — at the grand age of 85.

Annie Margaret Johnstone holds monthly whists in Fleet Valley which is sponsored by various local businesses.

The events are well supported by the community, with proceeds going towards paying visiting artistes.

Annie Margaret, who is from the town, said: “I ask the home to devote the money between the entertainment fund and the day fund.

“It’s not for the running of the home.

“It’s not a lot — maybe £50 a month — but it all adds up.

“This year, the total was £573.”

She added: “My husband Billy was in the home for about a year and I just carried it on after he died.

“I’ll have been doing it for two years come January. I would like to thank all the sponsors for their support and all the people who come to the whist drive and bring raffle prizes.”
