Gatehouse of Fleet youngsters encouraged to plant sunflowers to bloom just as coronavirus ends

Gatehouse youngsters are being encouraged to plant sunflower seeds in the hope that they will be in full bloom just as the Covid-19 virus withers away.

The seeds are contained in children’s activity packs being distributed by The Gatehouse Bunker (TGB).

The community action group’s base at No.1 High Street has been a hub of activity since the coronavirus lockdown began.

Co-ordinator Sara-leigh Cain said: “We put in some sunflower seeds so the children can start a sunflower growing competition.

“We are encouraging contestants to take photos of of their sunflowers as they grow.

“We will have prizes for different age categories later on in the summer.”

Other items in the activity packs include books, notepads, toys, pencils, sweets and silly putty.

“We have handed out 70 so far to children from pre-school to academy age,” said Sarah-leigh.

“We have also distributed 90 veggie packs with produce donated by local people.

“And we have given out 70 emergency parcels containing two days’ supply of food.”

An initial cash donation got the joint Gatehouse Community Church and TGB support initiative under way.

Donations of food and cash from members of the public also helped boost capacity.

In addition, TGB has set up a counselling service for any young people feeling lonely or isolated.

The Gatehouse Drop-in is co-sponsoring the scheme.

Sarah-leigh said: “We have set up a youth hotline for young people who may be getting a bit down and want a general chat.

“The service operates from TGB Gatehouse every day from 2-4pm and from the Gatehouse Drop-in from 6-8pm.”

TGB is working alongside Gatehouse Community Council to put support measures in place during the pandemic.

Sarah-leigh added: “The community council also has a help line for people with prescriptions to pick up.

“We are on their distribution list.”
