Gatehouse of Fleet residents gather at War Memorial to remember VJ Day

A small group of people assembled at the Gatehouse of Fleet War Memorial on Saturday to remember VJ Day.

At 10.50am, the Legion standard bearer Charlie Coid marched up to the war memorial to the sound of pipes played by Euan Donald.

The Rev Val Ott set the scene and then offered a prayer in remembrance of all those who served in the Far East in World War Two.

Two minutes silence was then observed.

The names of those from Gatehouse who were killed in the Far East were read out by Mike Ashmore, vice chairman of the newly amalgamated Castle Douglas and District Branch of Legion Scotland. This was followed by the Kohima Epitaph: “When you go home, tell them of us And say for your tomorrow, we gave our today.”

Provost Helen Keating, representing the community council, laid a wreath on the memorial and Josephine McCreath laid flowers in memory of her grandfather, Joseph Ward McNaught, who fought in the Far East with the Chindits.

A short film of the event is available on the Gatehouse of Fleet website www.gatehouse-of-fleet.co.uk.
