Gatehouse of Fleet experiences "deluge from the skies" as two people are rescued from their cars

Two people had to be rescued from their car due to a “deluge from the skies” last week.

The pair were trapped in the car near Gatehouse after a burn bust its banks on September 2.

The fire brigade, coastguard and police officers rushed to the scene around 7.30pm and managed to rescue the pair.

A fire service spokeswoman said: “We were alerted to reports of a car within flood water near Cardoness Castle, .

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances and two water rescue units to the scene to assist one male and one female from the car.

“Crews left after making the area safe.”

The heavy rain caused chaos in the area, including at Laggan Outdoor.

Director Duncan McConchie said: “My uncle has farmed the land for 76 years and has never seen anything like that.

“There was a deluge from the skies at about five o’clock and it was just horrific but it seemed to be focused between Auchenlarie and ourselves.

“We are building a manager’s hut and water was surrounding it so we had to dig trenches.

“Our roads have been washed away, we can’t get to our zipwire and barbecue hut, our holiday accommodation was flooded and our phone lines and internet are down.”

Highways Agency Amey sent out their incident support unit to deal with the problems on the A75 which had to be shut for several hours due to the amount of water.

A spokesman said: “With support from the local community, the ISU team was able to remove debris from the flooding and reopen some of the trunk road within a few hours. The route was fully restored shortly after that.

“Amey would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their patience while this trunk road recovery operation was carried out.”

The coastguard, police and fire brigade, as well as the Rescue 199 helicopter, were also needed in the successful hunt for a missing person at Laggan Outdoor the same evening.
