Gatehouse of Fleet couple celebrate diamond wedding at home due to coronavirus lockdown

A Gatehouse couple recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Ken and Yvonne McConnell marked the milestone on July 4 quietly at home due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The couple married in Ballylane, County Armagh on July 4, 1960 but their marriage got off to a rocky start as their camping honeymoon saw Ken pitch the tent in the path of a running stream.

During the night, water poured through the tent and right through their suitcases, depositing lots of mud in their clothes. Thankfully, Yvonne’s forgiven spirit meant they were still together by the end of that night as well as 60 years later.

After more than 40 years of Ken working as a minister and teacher in Northern Ireland and Yvonne bringing up their three children, they retired to the Stewartry in 1997 and bought a house in Gatehouse.

Ken worked as locum minister in the vacancy prior to the Rev Val Ott arriving, served as locum in Crossmichael and Penninghame and assisted Vale in Gatehouse and Borgue Parish.

Yvonne is also actively involved in the church as an elder and the flower convener and she also served on the guild committee.
