Gatehouse man discovers huge numbers of marine life stranded on Stewartry beaches after cold weather

The extreme cold weather conditions earlier this week saw marine life becoming stranded on Stewartry beaches.

Jim Logan from Gatehouse discovered huge numbers of bean razor and pod razor shells, as well as common otter shells and trough shells at Mossyard beach.

There were also empty nests of young sea potatoes while other people have reported large numbers of starfish.

Nearby Cardoness beach also saw a similar phenomena.

Jim said: “I believe the very cold weather the previous week could have frozen the beach at low tide. It had been a spring tide of 8.37 metres so a lot would have been exposed at 6am. When the tide came in the seawater would have been chilled on contact with the frozen beach.

“The recent rough weather would then dislodge them and wash them up on the beach.”

Jim is keen to hear of any similar discoveries on other beaches on the Solway coast. Email gallowaynews@s-un.co.uk and we’ll pass information on to him.
