Gatehouse hotel set for new future after being taken over by Laggan

A landmark Gatehouse hotel is scheduled to reopen in March, 2023, following an extensive refurbishment.

The Murray Arms was acquired by local family-run business Laggan in August.

Husband and wife owners Jim and Helen Stewart ran the boutique establishment for 11 years before its sale.

The Murray had been advertised with property agents Christie & Co with a guide price of £595,000.

The hotel will act as an extension of Laggan, the popular function and wedding venue, offering a bed and breakfast service to guests.

Laggan owners Duncan and Vicki McConchie are closely involved in the upgrade – with Vicki redesigning the interior.

The rooms will be restyled into 14 unique spaces comprising three twin rooms, one single room, three family rooms and seven king size rooms. The hotel will also provide staff accommodation.

Vicki said: “Similarly to GG’s Yard, the Murray Arms interiors will portray a feeling of modern Scottish undertones.

“The historic association with Robert Burns will be remembered in elements of wall art positioned carefully within the building.

“Stone flags will run throughout the bottom floor to create a more traditional look that’s beautiful yet robust.

“Mirrored areas will fabricate an added feeling of space and light in areas which currently feel darker.”

Duncan added: “Providing our guests with the best experience is of utmost importance to us, so four months ago, when the opportunity to expand our offering with The Murray Arms came about, it was a project not to be missed.

“Whether it’s attending a wedding or having a holiday in the area that includes a meal at Gather, we want visitors to have the full Laggan experience.

“Additionally, Gatehouse of Fleet is a beautiful town in Dumfries and Galloway and we need to showcase what our region has to offer.”

Locals will be invited to a special opening evening on March 16 to visit the hotel, meet the team and explore its new look.
