Gatehouse Golf Club to mark 75th anniversary of Junior Cally Cup

Gatehouse Golf Club’s junior golf scene is set to make history in 2023 with the 75th anniversary of the Junior Cally Cup.

The esteemed trophy was presented by Mrs Murray Usher back in 1948 and has been fiercely contested by talented under-18s in Dumfries, Kirkcudbright and Wigtown counties ever since.

To mark the occasion, junior convenor David McNicol is anticipating a strong turnout of promising young golfers from the region on August 12th.

Last year’s winner, Luke Murphy (Dumfries & Galloway), will be aiming to retain his title and join the select group of five players who have won the trophy in consecutive seasons.

Over the past 75 years the Junior Cally Cup has been lifted by notable names such as Eric Guthrie, Edward Shamash and David Fulton.

Gary McClymont remains the sole player to win both the Junior Cally Cup (1985) and the Cally Cup (1995).

The club is currently on the hunt for the oldest living winner of the trophy, with the hope of having them present it to this year’s champion.

Prizes will be awarded in two classes based on maximum handicap 36, with Class two for handicaps 21-36 and Class one for handicaps of 20 or less. The clib also hope to have prizes for nearest the pin on the 5th and 9th holes with the longest drive on the 6th.
