Gate system repair will allow bigger boats into the city's docks

The main entrance used by tall ships, yachts and tugs into the city's docks is set to re-open later this month following repair work.

The Canning River entrance gate closed in April to allow repair work following a hydraulic failure. The closure prevented tug boats, yachts and tall ships sailing into Albert, Canning and Salthouse docks.

The Canal and River Trust have now told the ECHO that the entrance is set to re-open on October 24. A spokesperson said that the repair work has improved safety features at the gate which would allow larger boats into the city's docks and canals.

Richard McDonald, a blue badge tour guide, said that the gate had been closed for too long.

He said: "Liverpool's docks were made for the great tall-ships and ocean going vessels of the world. The fact they've been closed since April has deprived visitors and locals the chance to glimpse how the docks looked in their heyday."

In April the trust posted a statement on its website which said that the gate had closed following a failure with the hydraulic system. A specialist hydraulic engineer was sent to the bridge to oversee the repair, the trust said.

Speaking earlier today a spokesperson for the trust said: “The Canal & River Trust has been carrying out extensive repairs to the historic Canning River Entrance gate and powered bridges and Albert Dock gates to improve the safety and reliability of the controls and operation to allow large boats and vessels to enter Liverpool’s historic docks.

“The project work has taken longer than anticipated but we’re pleased that the work is now complete and we’re looking forward to welcoming large boats back into the docks with the first vessels due to arrive 24 October.”
