Gate at West Road Crematorium removed after it's damaged in 'incident'

Part of the gates at Newcastle's West Road Crematorium appear to have been removed after they were damaged during an 'incident'

Workmen spent part of Saturday trying to repair the damage after the incident on Friday forced the cemetery to temporarily close.

One local claimed that they had been struck by a large vehicle. ChronicleLive attempted to verify this with the Crematorium however nobody was immediately available for comment.

The venue has since reopened. but, the middle pillar and gates have been removed.

"There is still some limited access and we advise any visitors follow any instructions from staff to ensure their safety," reads a statement on the Crematorium's website.

"We would like to reassure anyone with a funeral planned from Monday 7th September that their ceremony will go ahead as planned and we will work with Funeral Directors to ensure arrangements are in place.

"Our Bereavement Services will reopen on Monday 7th September at 8.30am and will be on hand to answer any queries.

West Road Crematorium was closed this morning following an incident last night (Friday) where a van crashed into the central pillar of the main gates into the Crematorium. The gate was so badly damaged that the central pillar and gates have been taken down. (Newcastle Chronicle)

The Crematorium can usually host over a dozen services per day across the two chapels.

It initially closed for everything besides funerals during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, although the council later reversed that decision.

It has since staged the funeral of World Cup winner Jack Charlton.
