Gasping for breath: Are Odisha’s twin cities going the Delhi way?

Air pollution levels are steadily rising across several cities in Odisha, particularly in the ‘Twin Cities’ of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the air quality index (AQI) in the Twin Cities has ranged between 230 and 300 since December 2025, oscillating between the ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’ categories. Research indicates that air quality in these cities is deteriorating due to rising industrialisation, vehicular pollution, and construction.

Speaking to Newslaundry, an official at the Odisha State Pollution Control Board said that an “action plan has been prepared” and that the concerned agencies have been “instructed to take necessary action”. However, there is a noticeable lack of awareness among residents regarding the dangers of air pollution. Many people we spoke with were unaware of how serious the threat is or how its effects will gradually impact their health.
