Gasheads to hold Christmas food collection at the Mem before Bristol Rovers vs Southend United

Bristol Rovers fans hoping to spread the festive cheer to people in need will host a foodbank collection at the Mem this weekend.

Gasheads Against Food Poverty (GAFP) will hold a collection before Saturday's League One game with Southend United, asking fans to make a difference to less fortunate peoples' Christmas.

The collection, which will support Bristol foodbanks under the Trussell Trust's umbrella, will be GAFP's third since it was formed in 2018, with more than two tonnes of food donated to the cause.

The trust oversaw a spike in distribution of emergency supplies in North Bristol from April to September, and GAFP has urged fans to 'donate whatever they can'.

Its spokesman said: "We think it's a real concern that in 2019 so many people still need to use foodbanks and the number is rising year on year.

"Recent figures show that there has been a 54% increase in the number of food packages handed out in North Bristol.

"At times like these it's amazing to see how much the football community comes together to help others and we have seen this in our previous collections.

"We know Christmas is a hard time for many and we will be grateful for any donations to help make someone's Christmas that little bit more special. So come along at see us at the Southend game and please donate whatever you can."

GAFP is appealing for donations of festive treats including chocolates, buscuits, selection boxes and Christmas puddings, plus savory snacks.

Tinned items, gravy, custard and fruit juice are also desired.

GAFP's spokesman added: "Contributions of any other non-perishable foods, juices, sanitary products are also welcome.

"Supporters will be able to bring donations to the donation point just inside the Memorial gates from 1pm on the day."
