Gas leak in Glasgow west end forces evacuation of residents

A "large gas leak" has forced the evacuation of homes and businesses in Glasgow 's west end.

Emergency services raced to Kelvinhaugh Street in Finnieston just before 12pm amid reports of damage to the gas main in the area.

Gas Firm SGN confirmed their engineers are on site.

Residents within 100 metres of the leak were forced to leave their properties.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We are currently in attendance at #Kelvinhaugh Street in Glasgow following reports of a large gas leak.

"Firefighters are working to assist partners with the evacuation of nearby buildings as a precaution."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland added: "We were altered to a report of a gas leak on Kelvinhaugh Street at around 11.40am.

"Emergency services are on site. Residential and commercial properties within 100 metres of the cordon area have been evacuated.

“A multi-agency operation is underway to make the area safe.”

And an SGN spokesman added: "Our engineers are on their way to site following reports of third party damage to our gas main in Kelvinhaugh Street.

"We’ll be working to investigate the extent of the damage to our network and ensure the safety of the surrounding area."
