Gas leak from cooker closes Ayr primary school in estate rocked by horror explosion

An Ayr primary school in an estate rocked by a house explosion had to close due to a gas leak today.

Kincaidston Primary School was shut down after a number of people reported smelling gas.

Scottish Gas Networks (SGN), currently in the estate carrying out a major job replacing old gas pipes, carried out checks.

Parents were told the school would close this morning at 8.20am before kids had arrived at class, with the breakfast club facility moved to the nearby Queen Margaret Academy.

It is understood that a kitchen appliance, believed to be a cooker, was identified as the source of the gas leak with further work expected to resolve the issue.

Worried parents were alerted to the closure just weeks after the devastating blast which ripped through four houses in Gorse Park on Monday, October 18.

A family of four were left seriously injured in the explosion which led to residents 'living in fear' after a number of gas leaks were reported.

The gas leak comes as SGN work to replace 5km of cast iron pipes with new safer plastic pipes.

A parent, who has a 10-year-old at the school, says they were alarmed when the gas leak text came through.

The parent, who did not wish to be named, told Ayrshire Live: "I think it is a real worry to see a text saying that the school is closing because of a gas leak.

"The words gas leak still cause panic and fear. To think this could have happened when children were in class is really concerning.

"There is a lot of work going on here to replace pipes but this is to do with a kitchen appliance. It is really scary considering what has gone on here over the last few months."

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council said: "Kincaidston Primary School was closed as a precaution this morning, after a number of people reported smelling gas.

"Scottish Gas Networks carried out checks which led to our property maintenance team repairing a kitchen appliance. The school is set to reopen tomorrow."

A spokesperson for SGN said: "This morning we attended reports of a gas escape at Kincaidston Primary School.

"The pipework causing the issue doesn’t belong to us but is part of the school’s own installation.

"However, we isolated the gas supply to the kitchen which ensured heating is still available to the rest of the school.

"Our engineers have now left site and the school has been given information on who to contact to fix the problem."
