Gas flows in northern Sinai were uninterrupted Monday despite an attack against a pipeline a day earlier.
A statement from the North Sinai governorate said on Monday that the explosion did not affect the houses, partners and projects that work in the gas field.
“The pipeline affected by the attack is a line for reserves coming from Port Said. It was built to raise the efficiency of the main line. Efforts are underway to inspect the explosion site and take the necessary measures to fix the damage as quickly as possible,” the statement said.
Reuters quoted a statement from partners developing the field as saying there had been no damage to the EMG pipeline.
"The flow of gas from Leviathan to Egypt is continuing as normal," the statement said.
The pipeline carries gas to homes and factories in el-Arish and central Sinai and has been attacked several times in the past.
Egyptian security forces have been battling extremists in North Sinai for years.
On Monday, ISIS-related accounts said the terrorist organization blew up the gas pipeline in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula, claiming it was connected to Israel.
Tribal and security sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that a gas pipeline passing in the area of Bir al-Abed, in northern Sinai, was seen burning on Sunday evening after an explosion was heard in the area.
“I saw flames of fire coming along the line after I heard the sound of an explosion,” Mohammed Jaber, a resident, told Asharq Al-Awsat on Monday.
A senior tribal figure, who wished to remain anonymous, said the explosion hit a deserted and sandy area.
“Egyptian security forces often pursue terrorist groups in this area,” he said.
