Gas firm to replace entire pipe network around Ayr explosion site following horror blast

Gas firm SGN has today vowed to rip up Kincaidston’s entire gas network after residents voiced concerns in the aftermath of the devastating explosion.

The company has today written to the community who demanded action after weeks spent living in fear.

Engineers will begin removing ancient iron pipes which are said to be corroding and replace them with new, safer plastic ones.

SGN has promised a complete overhaul of the pipe network starting in a matter of weeks.

It comes as residents launched a campaign for change as well as clarity from SGN after weeks of uncertainty.

Engineers have been carrying out patchwork jobs across the estate following the horror blast in Gorse Park.

A family of four ended up in hospitals across Glasgow following the explosion which wiped out four homes on Monday, October 18.

An investigation into the blast is still ongoing with police and health and safety chiefs probing the tragedy.

Today, SGN bosses wrote to residents promising the change they demanded with work set to start in the week beginning Monday, November 29.

A letter to residents reads: “Having listened to concerns from across the whole community, we’ve decided to convert our whole gas pipework on the Kincaidston estate to plastic pipe to provide everyone with reassurance. We’re now in the advanced stages of planning this significant project.

“We’ll be starting work during the week commencing November 29 and we’ll be writing to you again within the next two weeks to provide you with more detail on the project.

“This will include timescales and information on traffic management needed as we carry out the work.”

Community leader Robert Dunn – who vowed to lead a crusade against the gas firm – says the pressure on SGN has already paid off.

He told Ayrshire Live: “Our wee campaign worked and this proves it.

“I want this to happen elsewhere, not just for Kincaidston. It shows there is an issue with all of these pipes. It's morally the right thing to do.

“Our campaign was all about making Kincaidston safer. This is the first step in doing this.”
