Gary Usher's Burnt Truffle gets new hygiene rating after "lowest point" of his career

Merseyside chef Gary Usher says his Wirral restaurant Burnt Truffle has a new hygiene rating after what he described as the "lowest point" of his career.

Earlier this year, Usher admitted he had “f***ed up” after mould and ‘stinking water’ was found at the Heswall restaurant, which landed it with a one star rating by the Food Standards Agency.

The chef, who has restaurants across Merseyside including Wreckfish in Liverpool city centre, has now tweeted confirming the hygiene rating has been raised following another inspection.

Wirral council has confirmed to the ECHO that Burnt Truffle now has a hygiene rating of four following an inspection on February 4, 2020.

Sharing the news on Twitter, Usher said: “Good evening everyone. At 11 a.m this morning while I was sat in @BuRntTruffle the local EHO walked in for my requested unannounced re-inspection.

“We have now moved up to a 4. I hope this will give you the confidence in us. We will work closely with them now to get to a 5.”

He then followed the tweet up by admitting the ongoing issues with Burnt Truffle has been the “lowest point” of his career.

The post read: “This has been the lowest point of my career to date & id like to move on now if you’ll allow me.

“Thank you all for your undivided support. I can’t tell you how much it has meant to me.”

Fans were quick to support the chef, who earlier this week revealed that Burnt Truffle has been “f*****g dead” and encouraged support from customers.

User @goobervision said: “Onwards pal. Burnt is fantastic & Heswall’s jewel”, while @wilpappi said: “Never lost confidence #topgaff”.

@NikiKenwright added: “That kitchen is gleaming and the restaurant is amazing. Well done for getting back up to 4”.

Another user, @SimonBuckland2, added: “Well done fella, did as you said you would.”
