Gary Pallister names future Manchester United captain

Gary Pallister believes Harry Maguire is most definitely a future Manchester United captain and likened the £80million man to legendary United skippers Roy Keane and Bryan Robson.

Pallister, who played in Maguire's centre-back position for nine years at Old Trafford between 1989 and 1998, has been impressed with the new signing from Leicester City.

It has already been suggested by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that Maguire, 26, could take the armband in years to come. United's current club captain is Ashley Young, though David de Gea has worn the armband at times this season.

But Pallister said: “Harry Maguire is a class act and you’re looking at a future captain of the club; a leader that the club have lacked.

"I was fortunate to play under so many leaders, we had four or five who were that figure. I had Roy Keane, Bryan Robson, Paul Ince, Peter Schmeichel; there’s perhaps not the same number of a lot of them in the current dressing room.

"I think Harry can be that. You can see he’s got the leadership qualities. He’s one of the best centre halves in the Premier League."

Solskjaer is looking for more leaders in his squad, with Axel Tuanzebe the latest to be handed the captaincy - for the Carabao Cup tie against Rochdale.

Maguire is a stand-out candidate and Pallister has been impressed with how all of United's new signings have settled in, after three were bought for a total £140million in the summer.

“The three signings have been good," he added.

"(Daniel) James has scored a couple of great goals and his pace is incredible, he has space to move in to – it’s been a really good start for him. (Aaron) Wan-Bissaka – it almost looks like he’s got spider legs that can nick the ball away from people.”
