Gary Numan celebrated first No1 hits with static caravan holiday in Dorset

Pop star Gary Numan celebrated his first hits by booking a holiday – to a campsite.

While chart rivals like Simon Le Bon splashed out on super yachts and villas in the Med, cash-conscious Gary rented a static caravan in Weymouth, Dorset.

The electronic music pioneer booked the break after Are ‘Friends’ Electric? and Cars both hit No1 in 1979 and he and his band Tubeway Army appeared on Top Of The Pops for the first time.

Gary, 62, said: “Simon Le Bon bought a mega yacht and went to Montserrat.

“I rented a caravan at Littlesea Camp in Weymouth.

“We rented a really big caravan up on the hill and I honestly thought I was living the life!”

Gary, who now lives with his wife and three daughters in California, said the trip also brought back fond memories of childhood holidays.

Numan, who rose to fame with his band Tubeway Army in the 1970s and 80s, said he got hooked on caravan holidays as a boy.

He added: “The first holidays I remember are family trips to Weymouth.

“Most of our time was spent in a tiny touring caravan that my dad did up.

“Grandparents would turn up, aunties and uncles would turn up. It was a very family-oriented thing.”

The money-conscious star even once admitted he took his wife Gemma to a Little Chef on their first date.

Gary, son of a Heathrow Airport baggage handler revelead he has never been comfortable with fame.

He told Readers Digest mag: “I’ve never thought of myself as being particularly talented or important or special in any way.

“That’s the absolute God’s truth.”

His book (R)evolution: The Autobiography is out now.
