Gary Neville welcomes independent regulator plan as he makes Glazer family admission

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has welcomed the idea of an independent regulator being installed into English football to oversee club ownership, spending powers and cooperate governance.

Following the fallout of the European Super League earlier this year, in which the Premier League's traditional big six, including both Manchester City and United, threatened to form their own league with six other big-name European clubs, a grey cloud has been cast over the running of English football, especially the Premier League.

With the spending power those at the top of the English football pyramid have, the UK government has recommended the idea of implementing an independent regulator, which would weaken the Premier League's control and move the power to the Football Association and allow them to govern the game themselves.

That would mean they would be able to keep a much closer eye on a wide-range of areas within the sport, as well as throughout the football pyramid.

For former United skipper Neville, the idea is a welcoming one, with him insisting that the likes of the Glazer family, who own United, and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, both of whom boast extraordinary wealth, are those that run English football, purely because of the spending power they're capable of.

Neville told Sky Sports : "Sunderland, for instance, are now in League One. Manchester City have been in League One, they have seen what it is like down there.

"They should, at this moment in time, clubs like City and those that have been in those positions, look at it and think: 'Yes, I think we can come up with a better deal for football with more sustainability and stop Bury happening again.

'We can have real time monitoring, we can make sure control is replaced, we can be more diverse inclusive, we can have more regulations, make sure the game is fairer and we can make sure the FA are a little bit more powerful'.

"Who is to say that this independent regulator doesn't empower the FA over the next few years to give them the proper powers that are needed to govern the game properly?

"The FA don't govern the game in this country, let's be clear. We say it's the governing body, it's not.

"The game is run by Roman Abramovich, the Glazer family and Daniel Levy. But the six are struggling with the 14 at times and the 14 are struggling with the six, if they were being really honest.

"There is a division even in the Premier League. You have got to remember six Premier League clubs were scheming behind the other 14 members' backs for months, trying to build their own league, where, basically, they weren't going to allow the other 14 in.

"Then there was the Big Picture one where two or three teams at the top were scheming again, this time behind the executive of the Premier League and the other the clubs in the league.

"The Premier League cannot control their own clubs. So to suggest that there doesn't need to be some independence and some control, come on."
