Gary Neville believes Manchester United need up to six signings to improve the current squad.
The former defender was at Bramall Lane for United's 3-3 draw against Sheffield United where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were terrible in the first half.
Injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba left United short in midfield and to compensate the Norwegian played three at the back and it backfired with the hosts going 2-0 up.
But Neville believes it's not just midfield United need to strengthen in.
"The midfield’s just a problem for United full stop, let’s be clear about it," Gary Neville told Sky Sports.
"Even with Scott McTominay in it it’s a problem. They haven’t strengthened in that area, obviously [Paul] Pogba’s injured.
"It’s a problem for them and it’s just not good enough, the midfield just doesn’t have good enough quality. They need a striker, they need two midfield players, they need a left-back - they need five or six signings.
"They can’t do that until January and obviously the summer but the midfield will not go away as a problem for Manchester United just because of an injury. It’s a problem full stop - it needs strengthening."
After an uninspiring first half, where United were lucky to go in at just 1-0 down, Solskjaer brought off Phil Jones but the United manager admitted he could have subbed most of his team.
"I was angry, disappointed, you had to wake them up,"Solskjaer said. "You had to do something about it. I could have changed every player at half-time, apart from the keeper.
"It wasn’t about tactics. It was about the desire first half, getting first to the ball, tackling, winning challenges. Sometimes tactics go out of the window.
"You have to earn the right to win a game and we didn’t have any right to win the game after 70 minutes. We were nowhere near a Man United team."
