Gary Neville says Arsenal's two centre-backs weren't strong enough for the two goals which almost condemned the Gunners to a home defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday night.
Mikel Arteta's side needed a last gasp equaliser from substitute Alexandre Lacazette to take a point from a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium, in which they had led early on through a close range finish from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The Eagles turned the tables in the second period though, with first Christian Benteke and then Odsonne Edouard finding the back of the net, before Lacazette's first goal of the season spared Arteta's blushes.
Gabriel couldn't deal woth Benteke's sharp movement and finish for Palace's opener at the start of the second period, with £50million summer signing White wasn't close enough to Edouard when he fired in off the bar for the second.
Neville was disappointed with that, and called for Arsenal's defenders to do better.
“In this position, Ben White just drops off, drops off, drops off. You can’t drop off like that," Neville said on Sky Sports.
“I think both centre-backs, Gabriel and Ben White, will look at those goals and think, ‘look, we’ve got to try and engage outside the box’.
"You’re better off going and giving a foul away and taking a booking outside the box than letting him come in and shoot like that. And that isn’t good defending.”
Meanwhile goalscorer Lacazette was pleased with his first strike of the season, and said the result showed the Gunners' character.
"At the end we could draw. The main thing was to avoid the loss. We wanted to win, we started well but then stopped playing. I think this is something we have to work on in the future.

"It was my first goal of the season. I know I need to work hard to get some minutes and I try to enjoy as much as I can when I am on the pitch.
"He [Mikel Arteta] told us when we play well the fans are with us. This is what I tried to bring. When the fans are with us it gives us players energy. We need to give them what they want.
"We showed we have character. Even when we are down we don't give up."
