Gary Neville slams "nonsense" penalty decision as Man Utd punished vs Crystal Palace

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has blasted a VAR-aided decision which saw Crystal Palace re-take a penalty to go 2-0 up against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

With the Eagles 1-0 up, a spot-kick was awarded following a lengthy VAR delay when Victor Lindelof was harshly adjudged to have committed a handball in the box from an effort by Jordan Ayew.

The Palace striker stepped up to take the penalty, but his weak effort was saved when David de Gea dived to his right hand side to tip the shot away.

The game continued for a short time until referee Martin Atkinson blew his whistle to signal the spot-kick should be re-taken because De Gea was adjudged to be off his line at the point of contact.

Wilfried Zaha took the second penalty and made no mistake to bury it and put his side 2-0 up.

Neville was clearly angered by the incident, and was critical of both the decision to give the initial penalty and then for it to be re-taken too.

"That is an absolute disgrace," he said. "We are talking millimetres. This is unbelievable.

"I thought the penalty to Leeds last week was a nonsense and so is this one. It is never a penalty. Not a chance. Lindelof didn't have a clue (where the ball was)."

Debate over the incident also raged on social media, with fellow pundit Michael Owen tweeting: "I’ve no problem with the retaken penalty. Everyone knew officials were going to be strict on GK’s coming off their line.

"But that handball decision was a joke. Who makes up these ridiculous handball rules?"

And Gary Lineker added: "Not a penalty in a million seasons. Nonsensical decision," before he then added: "Good heavens. Game's gone."
