Gary Neville slams Man Utd owner Avram Glazer over Dubai meeting with Man City owner

Gary Neville has torn into Avram Glazer for meeting with Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour in the wake of Manchester United 's dismal Champions League exit.

The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 at home by Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night to condemn them to a last-16 elimination and a fifth consecutive season without silverware.

The result was the latest crushing blow of an unsatisfactory season at Old Trafford which has seen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked and United knocked out of both domestic cup competitions early on.

Their only hope of salvaging some success rests on interim manager Ralf Rangnick securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.

United have not lived up to the lofty expectations of their fans in recent seasons, yet the Glazer family are pursuing a new initiative to broaden the club's scope beyond football.

Avram Glazer, who serves as co-chairman, travelled to the Middle East earlier this week for talks with Sheikh Mansour about a "Manchester United cricket team" which will feature in a new league in the United Arab Emirates.

The Abu Dhabi royal took to Twitter to share the news of their meeting, writing: "I met with Avram Glazer, Co-Chairman of Manchester United, today and discussed ways to work together to further raise Dubai's profile as a global sporting hub.

"We also discussed the UAE T20 Cricket league's launch in Jan 2023 featuring Manchester United cricket team & other teams."

Sheikh Mansour's tweet was not well received by Neville, who was bitterly disappointed to see Avram Glazer meeting City's owner about setting up a cricket team so soon after United's continental calamity.

The Old Trafford legend also made a sarcastic reference to the Glazers' list of promises to the club's fans in the wake of the European Super League (ESL) debacle of April 2021.

Responding to the tweet about Avram Glazer, Neville wrote: "He must have stopped off on his way to Manchester for those fans meetings they promised post ESL!! United go out of the Champions League and he heads to Dubai to discuss Cricket."

Joel Glazer, Avram's brother, was due to be one of the vice-chairmen of the ill-fated ESL which collapsed within 48 hours of its unveiling.

There was huge backlash to the Glazers following the episode, including a mass protest at Old Trafford which led to the pitch being stormed and the postponement of a Premier League game against Liverpool.

In an open later to fans, Joel Glazer said there would be an "ambitious package of measures which will transform our relationship with fans and strengthen the club for the long-term". However, Neville feels the Glazers have not lived up to their pledge and, in a separate tweet, he wrote: "They haven’t done any of this stuff."
