Gary Neville slams Covid passports for fans as Premier League talks continue

Gary Neville has slammed the idea of fans needing vaccination passports to attend games as the Premier League discusses whether to introduce them.

The Premier League remains in talks over whether supporters will be required to provide proof of full coronavirus vaccination next season.

A decision has yet to be made as Liverpool prepare to face Norwich at Carrow Road and Everton clash with Southampton at home on August 14.

The Premier League is carrying out a review of the latest Covid guidance and working with clubs, supporters and the authorities to finalise its protocols.

Despite the removal of the majority of Covid restrictions in England on Monday, the government has yet to clarify what constitutes a large crowd, and the type of relevant venues, for potential vaccination passports.

The Premier League will only follow any mandatory government regulations on the matter but a Downing Street spokesperson has said they are "not seeking to draw lines around particular settings."

Neville insisted that fans should not need to show proof of vaccination to attend games.

He said on Twitter : "You shouldn’t need a passport to watch a football match! Test events have been carried out with great success."

Both Liverpool and Everton were handed a boost from the Liverpool Ground Safety Advisory Group ahead of the start of the new season last week.

The group, working alongside the council, recommended that both Anfield and Goodison Park return to "almost full capacity" for the start of the 2021/22 season.
