Gary Neville has pointed to Liverpool's supposed socialist roots under their iconic former manager Bill Shankly as another reason why the club are betraying their past to sign up to the new European Super League.
The Reds, along with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham, announced their intention to join the new tournament in a joint statement that rocked football on Sunday.
The new tournament would run alongside the clubs' participation in their domestic leagues, and serve as a money-spinning replacement for the UEFA Champions League, which had been due to announce new reforms on Monday.
The move has been met with almost universal outrage from supporters of all six Premier League clubs, with Neville making his opposition to the plan known on Sky Sports.
On Monday morning he quote tweeted Liverpool 's announcement of their intention to join the new league with a pointed quote from former boss Shankly, the man who brought Liverpool up from the Second Division and established them as one of the leading forces in the English and European game.
Shankly's full quote is: "The socialism I believe in isn't really politics. It is a way of living. It is humanity.
"I believe the only way to live and to be truly successful is by collective effort, with everyone working for each other, everyone helping each other, and everyone having a share of the rewards at the end of the day.
"That might be asking a lot, but it's the way I see football and the way I see life."
In a separate tweet, Neville added: "This lot think they can sweep up £300m more each season than the other teams and then wander back on a Saturday and play with that advantage in the Premier League.
"Deduct points , fine heavily and embargo transfers. I hope they haven’t bought some of the other 14 clubs."
