Gary Neville sets challenge to Daniel James after Leeds United transfer

Gary Neville has identified where Daniel James can improve under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United.

The winger made his full debut for the Whites against Newcastle United on Friday night following his deadline day switch from Manchester United.

After a strong start at Old Trafford, James fell down the pecking order at Manchester United but was often selected away fom home in matches where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played on the counter-attack.

With space to drive into, James particularly thrived but Neville has challenged the winger to develop his ability to create chances against deeper defences.

"I’m really happy that he’s left Manchester United to go to Leeds because I think he would’ve been a bit-part player at best at Manchester United," Neville told Sky Sports.

"They’ve got so many attacking players, so many forwards. He comes here at Leeds United, they basically go from box-to-box, getting forward and sprinting back, he’s honest as the days long.

"I think the bits of the game he can improve on is the last part. There will be times he has to be against a deep defence, I think that’s somewhere where Dan James sometimes needs to improve and get his game better where it’s a little bit tighter, there isn’t much space to run into and he’s got lots of players around him.

"There are parts of his game to improve, but he’s young, he’s enthusiastic and I think he does suit this Leeds style of play."
