Gary Neville sends Ole Gunnar Solskjaer message of support following Manchester United sacking

Gary Neville has thanked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for his work as manager of Manchester United.

Solskjaer's almost three-year tenure at United came to an end on Sunday morning as the Norwegian was sacked.

The Reds' 4-1 defeat away at relegation candidates Watford on Saturday was the final blow after weeks of poor performances.

Neville has been subject to intense criticism in recent weeks after refusing to join the voices that called for Solskjaer to be relieved of his duties and the United legend took to social media in response to the news of the sacking to send a message of support.

"Thank you Ole. You did us proud," Neville wrote.

"The last two months were tough but before that you restored some soul into the club."

United released a statement with the confirmation that Solskjaer had been sacked on Sunday morning.

"Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision," the statement read.

"While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.

"He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family."
