Gary Neville sends message to Premier League over coronavirus as season hangs in the balance

Gary Neville has called on the Premier League and EFL to follow the rest of world football and postpone all upcoming matches.

Reports have suggested that all football games in England could soon be set to be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The number of cases in the UK rose to 460 on Wednesday, representing the biggest single-day increase on these shores so far.

Across Europe, action has already been taken that sees football matches being played behind closed doors, while La Liga and the MLS confirmed on Thursday that they have taken the option to suspend all upcoming fixtures.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to chair an emergency Cobra meeting today to discuss what the UK can do to help slow down the spread of the coronavirus, with the possibility of football matches being forced to be played behind closed doors.

But Neville believes the only option is to suspend all upcoming matches.

“The MLS has been suspended for 30 days! @premierleague @EFL,” he wrote on Twitter.

While the former Manchester United man is also not in favour of clubs being forced to play behind closed doors.

"I do NOT support matches played behind closed doors. If it’s necessary to shut down stadiums the associations must find a way of delaying the season and playing the games when it is safe to do so to protect the revenues for clubs that require this income to survive,” he wrote on the social media site on Tuesday.

According to French publication L'Equipe, the Champions League and the Europa League will be suspended when they meet next week.

While Euro 2020 is also expected to be pushed back a year as a result, in order to give the two club competitions the time to finish in the summer.
