Gary Neville sends Harry Maguire Manchester United captaincy message

Gary Neville has encouraged Harry Maguire to stick through the tough times at Manchester United after he was named club captain following Ashley Young's departure.

The summer signing has already led United out on a number of occasions this season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the England international would replace Young on a permanent basis after the 34-year-old joined Inter Milan.

It was a big vote of confidence from the Norwegian to hand the former Leicester man the armband despite only being at the club a number of months and former captain Neville had some advice for the England international.

"Congratulations! The s*** will come thick and fast in the next year or two. Stick at it as you are the captain of the biggest club in the world and it will rise and win again," Neville tweeted.

Maguire will lead the team out at Anfield on Sunday as Solskjaer's side look to become the first team to beat the league leaders in the Premier League since April 2017 and the former Leicester man has spoken of his pride.

"It’s a massive honour to be the captain of this prestigious club. It’s a great feeling for myself but the hard work continues and I’ll keep doing the best I can, on and off the pitch, to make this club successful," Maguire said.

"I've only been here five or s

ix months and to gain his trust in that amount of time is obviously a great feeling for myself. It gives me confidence going into games and the way I put myself around the place.

"Off the field and on the field is especially important as a captain and it’s something I’m looking forward to but, like I said, the main thing is being successful as a club during the time I’m here.”
