Gary Neville has advised Phil Foden to run his own Twitter account in future after the Manchester City star appeared to call out Kylian Mbappe after setting up a Champions League semi-final against PSG.
Foden netted the winning goal for City in their 2-1 quarter-final second-leg win over Borussia Dortmund, having done the same in the first leg to give them a 4-2 victory on aggregate.
His Twitter activity post-match set tongues wagging as, just minutes after the final whistle, Foden's account tagged PSG star Mbappe with the message 'are you ready' as thoughts turned to what will be an eagerly-anticipated semi-final.
But the tweet was deleted overnight, with reports claiming Foden was left angry after a social media company he employs sent the message.
By that point, the tweet had already been retweeted thousands of times and shown on BT Sport's Champions League coverage, although Mbappe himself did not respond to it.
The Daily Mail have reported that Foden could well now look to end his relationship with the social media company.
After former City goalkeeper Joe Hart was forced to apologise after his Instagram posted a 'job done' message following Tottenham Hotspur's Europa League exit, Neville says the Foden incident is a further example of why footballers should run their own accounts, instead of letting social media companies do so.
He said: "I mentioned on here a few weeks ago about players having their accounts run by social media companies.
"Lads run your own accounts! Your independent thought and authenticity is at stake.
"It’s your voice, not anyone else’s."
Neville also took aim at the lack of authentic footballer's voices on social media during the international break, pointing to the amount of England players that had used the same phrases in their tweets after a victory.
