Gary Neville sends Aaron Wan-Bissaka message after Manchester United goal vs Southampton

Gary Neville jokingly thanked Aaron Wan-Bissaka for his 'tribute' in Manchester United's game against Southampton.

United ran riot against Saints, who were reduced to 10 men just over 70 seconds into the match due to Alexandre Jankewitz's horror tackle on Scott McTominay.

The red card forced the already injury-depleted Saints to go on the defensive, which allowed United to push men forward.

It meant full-back Wan-Bissaka was able to advance into the box and turn Luke Shaw's cross in from close range to give the Reds the lead.

Taking to Twitter, Neville pointed out it was 10 years to the day since he retired and said a right-back scoring was the perfect tribute.

He wrote: "Ten years ago today I retired! What a tribute that is from @AWBissaka" with a laughing emoji.

Neville opted to retire mid-season in 2011 after 602 appearances for his boyhood club, which placed him fifth in the Reds' all-time record appearances list.

Speaking last year, Neville revealed he had planned on retiring the season before but was convinced to carry on playing after a run of good form.

"'I agreed to come to Sky and was offered a job coaching the youth side of things," Neville said on Sky Sports. "I was thinking of finishing the previous season to when I did retire.

"I had a good few games and maybe conned the hierarchy into thinking there was one more season in me. If I had finished then it would have been perfect but decided to stay on and then I was gone the next January.

"I felt in those last six to eight months I was embarrassed. I didn't want to be picked. The other lads like Rafael, you saw in training that their energy was unbelievable compared to mine.

"Then you start taking up bad positions to make up for it. That game at West Brom was a horror show for 62 minutes. The same at Stoke and Everton. We finished 3-3 after leading 3-1 and the two goals came down my side.

"At 32, 33, I was never going to play for another team so if Sir Alex Ferguson told me I was done then moving elsewhere wouldn't have been an option."
