Gary Neville says Super League plan is "finished" after Chelsea decision and Man City statement

Gary Neville believes plans for a new European Super League are finished.

This comes after Manchester City became the first team to confirm via a statement on their club website that they will no longer be a part of the proposed breakaway league.

Meanwhile, football.london understands Chelsea are also preparing to pull out of the competition as owner Roman Abramovich has given the green light to perform a u-turn despite agreeing to the new league over the weekend.

Pressure had been mounting on Premier League clubs following near-total condemnation from fans, pundits, politicians and their own players beginning to speak out on the wildly unpopular plans.

And with Tuesday's breakthrough, Neville believes all talk about the Super League is now done.

"Absolutely quite incredible," Neville said on Sky Sports. "I think there was large concern yesterday morning, waking up thinking, for me particularly as a United fan, that Joel Glazer has put his name on a statement.

"You think about what he went through in the takeover of Manchester United, they withstood a barrage of abuse, it didn’t bother them, they went through it and you thought: ‘It’s going to be difficult for them to back down’ and they haven’t backed down yet.

"But City have enacted their withdrawal procedure, and it looks like Chelsea are on their way - it’s done, it’s finished.

"They’ll have their PR team, comms teams, scrambling around now, trying to make this look as lovely as possible in the next 24 hours, working out the right time to withdraw from it."

Neville also touched on potential repercussions from Florentino Perez, who was the newly installed chairman of the European Super League.

The Spaniard insisted the clubs involved could not break free.

"The contract of the Super League is binding. Nobody can leave, we will work altogether," he said.

"All the clubs signed the contracts last Saturday - there's no problem."

It remains to be seen how Perez responds to teams attempting to leave, but Neville hopes they'll have to pay a massive fine.

"Perez might have them on a £100million fine - I hope so - I hope Perez has got them on a massive fine to withdraw, the lot of them, I hope they basically end up eating each other," Neville added.

Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool have since released statements regarding their intention to also leave the Super League.
