Gary Neville's verdict on the Newcastle United takeover

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has given his verdict on the expected takeover at Newcastle United.

The deal to bring Mike Ashley's 13-year tenure on Tyneside is currently with the Premier League's owner's and director's test, with recent reports indicating the takeover will be confirmed next week.

The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PiF) would take an 80% share in the Magpies, with Ripon-born financier Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers also acquiring stakes in the club.

Controversy has surround the involvement of the PiF, with numerous bodies and pundits voicing their concerns at a Saudi-led consortium acquiring a Premier League club.

Amnesty International has warned the Premier League it risks becoming a "patsy" if a deal is sanctioned due to the country's human rights record, while the the fiancee of murder journalist Jamal Khashoggi has also called on the takeover to be blocked.

Former Manchester United full-back Neville hosted an impromptu question and answer session on Twitter on Saturday morning.

Among the subjects raised was the proposed takeover at St James' Park, with one fan asking for the 45-year-old's opinion on the potential deal.

Rather than advocating a block on the deal due to Saudi involvement, Neville suggested collaboration could lead to a positive impact in Saudi Arabia.

He wrote: "We either adopt a policy of working with nations to improve policies we don’t like or we alienate them until they change to our way (we aren’t perfect).

"I prefer to collaborate and set targets where they change their ways than not communicate / deal with and not impact them."
