Gary Neville's reaction to Anthony Martial miss for Manchester United vs Liverpool FC

Gary Neville is never shy when it comes to showing his emotions about Manchester United.

That was no different, despite the fact the former United defender was working for Sky Sports during Sunday afternoon's 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

The nature of the defeat, with United battling hard only to be undone by the superior quality of Jurgen Klopp's side, clearly hit Neville hard.

He couldn't hide his frustration when squandered the visitors' best chance of the game at Anfield, with the Frenchman playing a give-and-go with Andreas Pereira before blazing off target — when the score was 1-0. Footage from the broadcasters showed Neville slam his hand down on the table while next to fellow commentators Jamie Carragher and Martin Tyler on the gantry.

His reaction will undoubtedly have reflected the frustration shared by fellow United fans watching in the Anfield Road end and around the world on television.

Neville, speaking on his podcast for Sky Sports, reflected on how painful the Anfield atmosphere felt for United.

He said: “That’s the first time I’ve heard this crowd sing that song - ‘We shall not be moved’ and ‘We’re gonna win the league’ - with that level of surety and confidence for 30 years. And it’s painful.

“If you’re a Manchester United person, essentially, working at the club in this last seven or eight years you have to take responsibility for this, through the bad decisions that have been made.

“For Liverpool, they’ve made good decisions, they’ve recruited well, they’ve got a great manager whose built something special here over the last three of four years; the connection between Jurgen Klopp, his team and the fans is fantastic.

“We’ve just witnessed Liverpool there today announce that they are going to win the league, even though we all already knew.”
