Gary Neville has sent a pointed message to Boris Johnson and the UK Government as he slammed Donald Trump on the day he loses the US Presidency.
Joe Biden will be inaugurated as Trump's successor later today after a toxic period in US history, culminating in violent protests at the US Capitol by supporters of the outgoing President.
Trump's incessant, unfounded claims of election fraud saw him suspended from social media and led to the disturbing scenes in Washington on January 6.
Neville has been an outspoken critic of Johnson and his Government, particularly of their handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
And he has once again taken aim as Trump prepares to leave the White House.
The Manchester United legend tweeted: "So Trump goes today. A horrible and dangerous period of leadership ends. He normalised mistruth and divided a nation.
"Whilst they aren’t as bad as the Trump administration the current UK government have similar traits. This type of politics must end. Let’s hope today is the start."
Johnson has been an ally of Trump throughout his controversial reign as President, but ex-Civil Service head Lord Sedwill has claimed the Prime Minister is pleased to see him go.
He wrote in the Daily Mail: "Those of us who regard ourselves as close American allies have badly missed US leadership over the past four years.
"Based on my time working for Boris Johnson in Downing Street, I believe those who have said he would have preferred a second Trump term are mistaken.
"That would not have been to the benefit of British or European security, to transatlantic trade, let alone the environmental agenda to which the prime minister is so committed.
"With Brexit accomplished and the Biden administration ready to re-engage, this is the moment for Global Britain to step up."
