Gary Neville's MNF verdict on 'obscene' Man Utd star Daniel James - but Wolves display booed by crowd after dive controversy

Gary Neville has described Manchester United youngster Daniel James as "obscene".

The former Swansea City starlet made his first Premier League start for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against Wolves on Monday evening.

He came off the bench in his first game at Old Trafford, scoring the fourth in a 4-0 drubbing of Chelsea last weekend.

And the Welshman was rewarded with a start at Molineux in an extremely youthful first XI for the visitors.

In the build-up to the match, Neville and Jamie Carragher discussed James' impact so far with the Red Devils and the role he could play for Solskjaer's side going forward.

Neville said on Monday Night Football: "One thing he needs is space to run into. That’s the big challenge, I think, for Daniel James - how does he cope when teams are playing deep, when there’s five spread across the back like Wolves are tonight and he’s got less space to run into.

"If he gets one-on-one, it’s absolutely obscene pace that he’s got. It’s ridiculous. You would not want to play against him.

"Look at that now - he’s making six, seven, eight yards in the space of about 25 yards.

"His quality’s decent when he gets there. It’s an unbelievable start for him. We thought he probably would have started off the bench tonight and come on again. We thought it’d be three in midfield against Wolves’ three. It’s a big ask for McTominay in there. But Ole fancies it. He’s got all the pace on the counter-attack.

"I think the first goal tonight’s going to be critical - whoever gets it will be big favourites for tonight."

As it turned out, United struck first through Anthony Martial, and took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break.

But James was booked early in the game for simulation, with the winger going down easily under a challenge from Joao Moutinho. Referee Jon Moss showed James a yellow card for diving.

He was subsequently booed by the home crowd every time he touched the ball.
