Gary Neville's dig at Boris Johnson as he praises 'leader' Gareth Southgate after England reach Euro 2020 final

Football pundit Gary Neville had a dig at Boris Johnson after England made it to the final of Euro 2020.

He was one of the many who lavished praise on manager Gareth Southgate, saying he was the perfect example of "what a leader should be".

The former Manchester United player has been a regular critic of the Prime Minister during the course of the pandemic.

Speaking to ITV after the game, he said: "I have to say Gareth Southgate his team, the staff the players everyone have been absolutely unbelievable and this crowd is mesmerised being in this stadium right now.

"The standard of leaders in this country over the last couple of years has been poor but looking at that man there that’s everything a leader should be.

"Respectful, humble, tells the truth, genuine, He’s fantastic Gareth Southgate. He really is unbelievable and has done a great job."

Those sentiments were largely echoed by Neville’s former Manchester United teammate, Roy Keane, who added: "Gareth really deserves all the credit in the world."

Sunday's final will be England's first in a major tournament for half a century after Harry Kane sent the Three Lions to the Euro 2020 final.

Skipper Kane bundled home the rebound after his weak extra-time penalty had been saved.

But England held out for a 2-1 victory, much to the delight of jubilant supporters, including the Duke of Cambridge, David Beckham and the Prime Minister at Wembley.

It was a night of mixed emotions for home fans, after Denmark took an unlikely lead only to concede an own goal equaliser 10 minutes later.

England fans outnumbered their Danish counterparts by six-to-one inside Wembley due to coronavirus-related travel restrictions.
