Gary Neville's August season prediction about Liverpool and Man Utd comes back to haunt him

Gary Neville will be left regretting his confidence about Manchester United's chances of glory at the start of the season after he predicted they would win the league before bitter rivals Liverpool.

Chelsea's win over Manchester City on Thursday saw the Reds clinch their first top-flight title in 30 years, and prompted scenes of joyous celebrations in Liverpool.

It's fair to say Neville did not see it coming when he made his predictions for the season in August after he backed United to lift the trophy before Liverpool.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said at the time: "What I’m saying is, Liverpool, City, Tottenham, all these clubs have had poor recruitment policies over the last 25 or 30 years at times. So United are going through one at the moment.

"Eventually they will stumble upon the right recruitment system, the right recruitment people, they’ll get a great manager – hopefully, that’s Ole – and they’ll start to win again. That’s going to happen.

"I can guarantee you as clear as day, Manchester United will win again. They’ll probably win the league before Liverpool, in my opinion. And that’s not being disrespectful, they’ll probably win the league before Liverpool."

Neville appears far from pleased with Liverpool's success, and shortly after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge he tweeted a waving hand emoji, suggesting he will be taking a break from social media while the celebrations are ongoing.

Liverpool fans bombarded his message with various gifs of Jurgen Klopp and the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah celebrating their triumph.

And Liverpool fan account The Redmen TV posted the clip of Neville goading Liverpool fans by saying the Red Devils would be first to the Premier League trophy.

Neville wasn't the only former United player to suggest he was taking a break from Twitter, with Rio Ferdinand tweeting "Brb @Twitter... see you in a couple weeks!" along with two laughing emojis.

But after their title wait finally came to an end, it's highly likely Liverpool fans will still be giving the United old boys some stick whenever they return to Twitter.
